NANS Commesorates with ATBU, Advocates for compensation

The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS under the leadership of     Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan   has  condoled and sympathised with the families of the deceased students of Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University, who lost their lives as a result of the heavy downpour which occurred on Monday night 5th August 2019 between the hours of 11pm to 1am of 6th August 2019.


The condolence message was contained in a statement signed by Abdulwaliu Ibrahim the Special Adviser External Affairs  to the Director Campus Affairs and Intervention, Zone C comprising North East and North Central.

He attributed "the collapsed of the bridge was due to poor fund attributed for the utilization and procurement of substandard materials used during the construction of the bridge." 

"The failure of the bridge was, as a result of mismanagement of fund allocated for the establishing proper road network on campus and illicit use of improper material for construction of bridges according to the engineering standards''.

Abdulwaliu added that "The National Association of Nigerian Students is tasked with the sole aim of making sure the needs of students are met irrespective of tribe, religion or ethnicity but as an umbrella body that makes sure the needs of students are met at all cost, an injury to one is an Injury  to all''.

He called on the relevant authorities to put hands on deck to curtail any impending violence and destruction of lives and properties that this incidence might cause, he also advocated the need for compensation to the families affected.

"We also calling on All relevant authorities to brisk up all efforts to curtail any impending violence situation  and to make sure students life and properties are not destroyed,  on behalf NANS  I am also  calling  the Vice Chancellor and the Governing Council of the University that the issuance of one week break is not  enough but all hands must be on deck to make sure that those missing students are properly searched for"

" The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA should also be on top of the situation, the management should make sure that those affected are properly taken care of and the families affected are well compensated for their loss'' 

The statement further called on the Federal Government to increase budgetry provisions to the universities which will enable them to provide the necessary infrastructures for the well-being of students.

" I am also calling on the federal government to allocate more funds to  the university for proper amenities and that, a bridge be constructed to immortalized the deceased  students''

" NANS activities are carried out within the framework of its constitution these among other things are to advocate /ensure quality education for all Nigerian Students at all times, to collaborate with other organizations for social - economic development of Nigeria, to constructively agitate for the welfarism of Nigerian Students at all times" Abdulwaliu says .
